Eligibility Criteria

Please read all of the statements below. In order to participate in this study, ALL of the statements must apply to you. If any of the statements do not apply to you, we are sorry, but you do not meet the requirements to participate in this study. Thank you for your time!


  • I am over the age of 18

  • I experience mild to moderate anxiety

  • I can come to either Wolfville or Halifax to meet with the researcher

  • I never or rarely experience suicidal thoughts at this time

  • I am not currently taking antibiotics or probiotics

  • I do not have HIV/AIDS

  • I am not currently undergoing chemotherapy

  • I do not have any of the following diagnosed conditions: Cancer, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis

  • I have a valid email address that I check routinely and daily access to the internet


  • Probiotic Yogurt (including frozen yogurt and yogurt drinks/smoothies)

  • Kefir

  • Kimchi (Kim chee)

  • Unpasteurized/uncooked tempeh

  • Unpasteurized/uncooked miso

  • Naturally Fermented Sauerkraut

  • Sour cream

  • Cottage cheese

  • The more expensive brands of uncooked cheese (cheddar, feta, gouda, etc.), including cheese made by Cow’s Dairy in PEI; note that processed cheese slices are okay

  • Naturally fermented, unpasteurized tamari and soy sauce

  • Any other foods that contain probiotics

It is important that you avoid foods containing probiotics throughout the five-week study period. Foods to avoid for the duration of the study include:
